LIFE LIBERNITRATE is a 3 years project in the context of the LIFE funding programme which main aim is to reduce the concentration of nitrates in the entire water cycle.
The use of chemical fertilisers has increased from 14 million tonnes in 1954 to a predicted 200.5 million tonnes in 2018. Nitrogen fertilisers trigger harmful environmental processes, such as eutrophication, acidification, pollution of water resources and emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). In Europe, 87% of groundwater contains excess of nitrates (European Environment Agency). In the intensive farming and cattle-rearing areas, the nitrate concentration in groundwater can reach up to seven times the legal limit. The number of areas vulnerable to this pollution has increased along the last years, especially in Romania, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, Germany and the UK. Various studies showed that the efficacy of soil management measures for decreasing the nitrate levels in rivers and groundwater is limited. New strategies are needed in order to speed up the recovery of EU water bodies from nitrate pollution. In this framework, LIFE LIBERNITRATE has been proposed as a way to reduce the concentration of nitrates in the comprehensive water cycle. This will achieved by implementing an integrated innovative, simple, economical, sustainable and transferable system.
To achieve this objective, two prototypes will be developed within the framework of the project:
- A prototype to produce active silica from the controlled incineration of rice straw to obtain silica-rich ash.
- A prototype of the preparation and implementation of active silica beds to reduce the concentration of nitrates in the water cycle acting:
– On the water header (from groundwater) and on the rejection water from an osmosis plant.
– On the water from wells for human consumption in small municipalities to reduce the nitrate concentration below 50 ppm, without the use of an osmosis plant.
The main objective of this proposal is to reduce the concentration of nitrates in the integral water cycle, implementing an integrated, innovative, simple, economical, sustainable and transferable system, based on the use of an adsorption bed made with active silica of the ashes produced by the controlled burning of rice straw.
Validate a project to obtain activated silica from the controlled incineration of rice straw to obtain silica-rich ash.
Validate a prototype preparation and implementation of active silica beds to reduce the concentration of nitrates in the water cycle by acting:
1. On the headwater (coming from groundwater) and rejection in an osmosis plant.
2. On well water for human consumption in small municipalities to reduce the concentration of nitrates below 50 ppm, without the use of an osmosis plant.
a comprehensive system of sensitization to farmers to promote the use of fertilizers of low environmental impact.
the project in the general policies of the EU and promote a plan of political intervention that promotes specific financing lines in the Operational Programs.
the impact of the project in environmental, social and economic terms.

LIFE LIBERNITRATE Project for the responsible reduction of nitrates in the comprehensive water cycle (LIFE16 ENV/ES/000419) has a set of basis focused on the technological surveillance in terms of planning, resources and the valorization of the system, all of these aspects are defined within the frame of the project action plan. This action is intended to determine, gather, analyze and disseminate the information related to goods, services, customers, competitors, as well as other relevant information that contributes to develop the main strategy to be applied in the Consortium decision-making.
